Comparing Open and Sealed Bid Auctions: Evidence from Online Labor Markets

O labor markets are Web-based platforms that enable buyers to identify and contract for information technology (IT) services with service providers using buyer-determined (BD) auctions. BD auctions in online labor markets either follow an open or a sealed bid format. We compare open and sealed bid auctions in online labor markets to identify which format is superior in terms of obtaining more b...

Accounting for Cognitive Costs in On - lineAuction

Many auction mechanisms, including rst and second price ascending and sealed bid auctions, have been proposed and analyzed in the economics literature. We compare the usefulness of diierent mechanisms for on-line auctions, focusing on the cognitive costs placed on users (e.g. the cost of determining the value of a good), the possibilities for agent mediation, and the trust properties of the auc...

Mergers in Sealed vs. Oral Asymmetric Auctions

In this paper, we study mergers in sealed-bid asymmetric auctions. By asymmetric, we mean that bidders are drawing values out of extreme value distributions with di erent means. We develop an algorithm to nd numerical solutions of the system of di erential equations for the inverse bidding functions at equilibrium. The equilibrium inverse bidding functions are found to have a singularity, a cri...

Cost and Trust Issues in On-Line Auctions

Many auction mechanisms, including rst and second-price ascending and sealed-bid auctions, have been proposed and analyzed in the economics literature. Di erent auction formats ...

The Influence of Privacy Cost on Monotonic Increasing Strategies in Sealed Bid First and Second-Price Auctions

This paper approaches first and second-price sealed-bid auctions from the point of view that bidding reveals one’s valuation, and hence comes with a privacy cost which depends on the valuation estimate. The privacy cost applies even if the sale is lost, and negative pay-offs, not possible in regular auctions, are possible. Hence auctions with privacy cost are not equivalent to regular auctions ...
